Values-Based Leadership: Building Trust and Realising Vision

In our roles as leaders, we yearn for the autonomy to execute our vision, to drive change, and to cultivate a future we deem possible. Often, we find our paths obstructed by various stakeholders.

Leaders often face resistance or indifference in their quest to execute their vision. This challenge stems primarily from a disconnect between the leader and stakeholders, rooted in a lack of shared understanding and values. To overcome this, leaders must not only identify but authentically integrate shared values into their leadership approach, known as 'values-based leadership'. For instance, if speed is a valued attribute, then swift decision-making should be evident. Similarly, if accountability is highlighted, the team should understand and uphold their roles diligently.

Listening is key. Leaders should attune themselves to the recurring themes or priorities vocalised by their superiors. This doesn't require direct questioning about values, but a discerning ear to conversations and directives. By interpreting and reflecting these values in their actions and communication, leaders can resonate with stakeholders on a deeper level, fostering trust.

Established trust acts as a gateway, granting leaders the autonomy they seek. When stakeholders resonate with a leader's values, they're more inclined to endorse their ideas. This alignment paves the way for growth opportunities, propelling leaders towards their 10% Differentiator. It's imperative to recognise that this alignment isn't a one-off endeavour. Constantly echoing shared values and building trust transforms leadership challenges into growth opportunities.
