Leaders Don’t Thrive Alone – The Impact of a Strong Community Where We Grow Together

We have an innate need to feel connected, to belong to a group, a community, or a network of people who share common interests.

1. Ideas, Insights and Inspirations

We have an innate need to feel connected, to belong to a group, a community, or a network of people who share common interests. Being part of such a community fosters interaction, the exchange of ideas, and the ability to learn from others. Although there are times when we may prefer solitude, we often realise that this isn’t ideal. Without the feedback and insights from others, we miss out on the opportunity to refine our thoughts, bounce off ideas, and grow.

Receiving feedback, though essential, can be challenging because it may feel like criticism. Being part of a community allows us to share ideas and engage in meaningful conversations with people who support and challenge us. This dynamic is much like family relationships - there are members you easily get along with and others who present more of a challenge, often due to differing values or perspectives. Still, both sides are valuable. In a community, we benefit not only from those who share our views but also from those who see things differently, helping us grow and think in new ways.

The richness of a community comes from this diversity of thought, creating a space where we feel supported while being pushed out of our comfort zones. Over the years, I’ve observed that many leaders, especially those engaged in leadership development or coaching programs, have a deep-seated need for such communities. They seek places where they can share ideas, learn from each other, and access tools that make their leadership journeys easier.

When I spoke with executive leaders about the concept of community, many expressed that while they valued the idea of being part of one, they were extremely time-poor. They lacked the time for extensive self-reflection, research, and participation in long, drawn-out programs
