How Change Creates Noise – and what to do about it

To become a more effective, high-performing leader, one must be willing to change leadership processes, systems, and mindset.

Night photography is challenging, often appearing with a certain degree of ‘photographic noise.’ Because of certain conditions such as low light in the evening or a daytime sandstorm, visibility may be affected, and the photographer must adjust certain settings on the camera.

Both my night-time shot of the Dubai Marina and my daytime shot of the Dubai city scape took patience and an understanding of the conditions at the time in order to reduce the ‘noise.’

Noise is also part of organisations going through change. To become a more effective, high-performing leader, one must be willing to change leadership processes, systems, and mindset. These changes along with changes in policies, leadership, or direction may lead to uncertainty and anxiety.

Uncertainty creates a void of information in which employees create narratives to make sense of what’s happening which are often untrue. This results in rumours, gossip, and false stories affecting the organisation’s health and productivity.

A leader’s role is crucial in managing this noise, providing clear, timely, and consistent communication, helping allay fears and ensuring it doesn't disrupt productivity or morale.

The best ways to manage workplace noise are through; clear communication, two-way dialogue, regular updates, leading by example, fostering a positive environment, training, and development, recognising, and rewarding and by encouraging team building.

The goal is not to silence chatter but to ensure the communication is positive, productive, and based in fact. When integrated into the organisational culture, this leads to a healthier, happier, and more productive workplace.
